Album consists of 73 carte-de-visites (CDVs) and 2 black and white prints documenting the Canfield and Hopkins families during the 1870s. Most of the photos are identified. Included are Thomas Canfield, Caroline Canfield, Mrs. Clement Hopkins, Eli Chittenden, and several of the Canfield's young children. A couple of the photos document gravestones at St. James Church in Arlington, Vermont. There are also a few photos of museum artwork and hand-drawn cards located in the back of the album.

Thomas Hawley Canfield was born in 1822 in Arlington, Vermont, one of two children of Mary Ann Hawley and Samuel Canfield. His sister, Maria, was born in 1824. In 1844 he married Elizabeth A. Chittenden, daughter of Eli Chittenden. She died in 1848 and Canfield married Caroline (Carrie) A. Hopkins, daughter of the Rt. Rev. Bishop Hopkins, in 1860. On 4 January 1838, Caroline A. Canfield was born to Melusina (Muller) and the Rev. Bishop John Hopkins in Burlington, Vermont.
